Get on the Bus!
Published
Back in 2009, the New Bern Ridge dental staff entered a Wake Health Community Project Contest and won $500 for their entry. But that was just the beginning. The idea was to build a bus stop shelter across from the New Bern Ridge Center on New Bern Avenue. Currently patients have to walk to WakeMed to find a shelter. Young children who are patients at New Bern Ridge are in danger of darting out into traffic or trudging an uncomfortable distance in inclement weather to wait for a bus.
The dental staff felt the situation was dire, so Dental Hygienist Renee Dito jumped on the case. She talked to Mr. Aaron Hair, City of Raleigh Transit Planner, and at first it appeared the number of passengers-per-day fell below the city’s minimums for placing a shelter there. But eventually he agreed the dangers warranted moving forward, and on March 1st , he put a contract in place to build the shelter within 60 days!
There is nothing a small group of committed people can’t do! And special thanks to Renee Dito who wasn’t shy about playing the squeaky wheel! Look for the new shelter by the end of April at the corner of New Bern Avenue and Peartree Lane.
