Why is Wake Health Services an excellent investment?

“I love the challenge and the interactions with my patients…I enjoy the collaborative team approach – seeing people thrive when they get the right supports in place. We truly believe the healing begins with us, right now, today.”

— Dr. James Hartye,
Horizon Health Center
Dr. Hartye

Consider this true patient story. We’ll call the patient ‘Elizabeth’ to protect her privacy.

Elizabeth has diabetes. The year before Elizabeth came through our doors, she was homeless and without a doctor. She went to a local Emergency Room EIGHT times that year, and on two occasions was admitted for 4-day stays.

A year’s worth of hospital costs for this ONE patient was $28,000.

Then Elizabeth found a medical home.  During the past 9 months, she has been a patient at Horizon Health Center, Wake Health’s healthcare for the homeless program.  Dr. James Hartye and the staff at Horizon wrapped their arms around Elizabeth-- treated her chronic illness, unveiled an untreated mental illness, provided her with medication and found her housing—FOR  A TOTAL COST OF $720.

Because Elizabeth is healthier, she is now able to take care of herself and  is  off the streets.   A costly and tragic downward spiral has been reversed!

The community has a choice:
Spend $28,000 when untreated chronic illness turns into an emergency, or spend $720 for quality primary care that PREVENTS chronic illness from spiraling into more costly care later.

The Community Health Center model of care
SAVES LIVES and SAVES MONEY.

But, we need the community’s investment – help us to save lives!

to people who could not afford to pay—
a figure that will grow to $2 million this year.

Today, you can…

John Kutty and Patient
  • Relieve the pain of a child’s toothache.
  • Restore normal breathing to a child with asthma.
  • Help a mother care for her newborn.
  • Keep a grandmother independent and out of the hospital.
  • Teach a diabetic to manage his illness.

Where do you want your donation to make a difference?

  • Where it is Needed Most With the highest unemployment rate in 25 years, and people losing their health insurance and their ability to pay for medications, you can imagine the range of complications and expenses that can result. Your donation and the services it can provide, is the safety net so many families need right now, who cannot afford to wait for better times.
  • Kids First Fund Your investment helps the staff at our two pediatric health centers care for problems with obesity and asthma, educate on good nutrition, uncover developmental disabilities and behavioral health problems, provide well-child exams and immunizations, teach new moms how to care for their infants, and connect families to other community resources-- regardless of their ability to pay.
  • Healthy Smiles Fund Wake Health’s New Bern Ridge Family Dental Center is the only dental practice in Wake County offering a discount on long-term, comprehensive dental services for all ages. The average cost of a routine dental exam with preventive care is approximately $125, while the cost to treat cavities or even more serious conditions, costs between $1,000 and $6,000. Your investment in preventive care saves money and avoids needless suffering.
  • Healthcare for the Homeless Fund- Your donation helps our clinical staff heal our homeless neighbors with compassionate care, medications and mental health counseling, so they can be productive, healthy citizens. Our average visit costs $125; compare that to $1,800 for a local emergency room visit when the chronic illness is not monitored and medications are not available. Providing preventive care is a wise and cost effective investment.

Yes! I want to give the gift of health to families in need in our community.
